Starting A Herb Garden

If you are new to gardening, growing herbs could be a nice place to start. A herb garden provides a fresh addition to the kitchen and most are easy to grow in a small corner of your yard, patio or on a window seal. Follow the steps below to get started.

Select Your Spot
Herbs grow well in almost any spot where they can receive at least 6 hours of sunlight. Cilantro, parsley and mint, do well with 3 or 4 hours of sunlight, so if your spot is a bit shady that’s okay.
It’s a good idea to place your herb garden where you can see it. This will inspire you to cook foods that will benefit from the plants you grow.

Plan your layout
Pots or small containers are easy to use in small places. For a larger space a raised bed or in-ground garden may be what you want. Remember the layout you choose should fit your needs.

Pick Your Plants
Make a list of the flavors you enjoy. If cooking is your hobby, add herbs that make up classic culinary collections, like rosemary, marjoram, thyme, and oregano. Add lavender to your herb garden to dry for sachets or soap making.

Plant Your Herb Garden
Dig a hole, then plant the herb to the same depth as it was in its original container. Fill in around the plant, gently pat down the soil, then water well.
Some herb like mint will take over so you may want to place them in a container to control its growth.

Harvest Frequently
Herbs respond well to harvesting, and will actually grow thicker with frequent snipping. For best results, harvest in the morning and never remove more than one-third of the plant, so that it can continue growing throughout the season.
