A Journey into Self-sufficiency.

In 2019, due to my family’s needs, I decided to work from home full-time. We had to start taking steps towards self-sufficiency in our food through vegetable gardening, fruit growing, and raising meat birds, such as Quail, Cornish Hens, and layers, giving us more self-reliance and food security, with the added benefits of improved health.

The garden area was created using raised beds and an in-ground, no-dig method. We work with nature, using traditional and natural methods to grow healthy, nutrient-rich food. Karla’s Garden is small, but with planning, we have created a space that feeds our family about 80 percent of the food we need.

Follow our story

Karla’s Garden is an ongoing journey in which we share every step of the way through writing, videos, and photography. On the website, you’ll find an account of my successes and failures, as I transition my yard into a small backyard farm. As I learn, my need to share the practice of self-sufficiency through backyard gardening has also grown.

Women-Owned and Operated

According to the United States Department of Agriculture, less than 15% of farms and agriculture-related businesses are woman-owned and operated. Karla’s Garden is proud to be part of that small hard-working group of trailblazers.

Sustainable

We recycle all garden waste in our seed production, to be reused for many more seasons. Because we grow in a small setting, we must use every bit of growing space to produce the seeds we love. We hand-harvest our products, use on-site composting, and recycling, and use organic, no-dig practices to produce an outstanding product.

Local

Karla’s Garden is a small-scale, sustainable urban producer of hand-harvested seeds, grown in Southeast Texas.

Small-Scale Seed Production

By purchasing our seeds, you support our small farm and ensure that small growers throughout the country preserve and produce rare varieties.

The benefits of local seed production are numerous, but most importantly the process promotes food sustainably.

Thank you for supporting our small farm and our work providing locally-produced, regionally adapted seeds.
