When it comes time to plant your garden there are some vegetables that you should transplanted, some that should be direct sown from seed, and others that can be planted either way. Your question is to sow or not to sow?
Below are 5 vegetables that are best direct sowed.
- Arugula
- Carrots
- Garlic
- Parsnips
- Potatoes
Most vegetable can be direct sowed if sown during the correct season, but the ones listed here do not like having their roots disturbed, so planting them as transplants is not the best option.
Why should you Direct Sow Seeds?
Direct sowing of seeds means planting seeds directly into the soil, this save you time and money. By cutting out the need for trays, tables, greenhouses, grow lights and potting soil. Based on the weather, you may even save on watering if it rains.
Quick Tips:
1. A clean bed with a fresh layer of compost will serve as a great place for planting.
2. Plant when the temperatures are right for the crop. When your seed are place in soil with the optimum temperature you have the best germination rates and healthier plants.
3. Water your bed before and after planting. This help keep the seeds in place and moisture after planting help with germination.
4. Write down your planting days, this will keep you on track with germination times and reseeding if needed. Remember a full bed makes for a happy garden. You only have so many growing days in a year, so keeping your beds planted ensures a great year’s harvest.
5. I don’t like thinning my plants, its a waste of time and money. So, don’t over-seed your beds. However, some seeds are so small it’s hard to get it right so thin if you must.
