Research suggests there are three qualities of music that can influence buying behavior in a retail environment. Tempo, Volume and Genre.
Tempo: Slow music, like smooth jazz slows down the pace at which shoppers move, leading to an increase in purchases.
Volume: Loud music led to less total shopping time than soft music, and in turn less spending.
Genre: In a study where Top-40 pop music versus classical music was played, classical music led to more money being spent by shoppers
Now these elements will change based on many variables, but it is clear that music does affect our shopping habits.
